When you apply for a loan you will either deal directly with the company providing the loan or you will be looked after by a loan broker who may partner with various companies and be able to offer you a selection of loans. Some of the companies that brokers use may not be well known to you, but because there are hundreds of brokers across the country, they are quite substantial businesses. In fact many of the biggest lending companies are in fact backed by the main banks.
FirstPlus
FirstPlus are based in Cardiff and were one of the UK's biggest personal loans providers. They were founded in 1997 and at their peak were lending around £80million every month in secured personal loans. They are owned by Barclays Bank PLC Group. They no longer offer new loans.
Paragon Personal Finance
Paragon are a specialist lender and were a big player in the personal finance market. They had 600 staff and specialised in personal finance, vehicle finance and retail finance. Now they only service existing loan customers and do not provide new loans. They do provide mortgages through Paragon Mortgages.
